At the core of many workplace challenges and conflicts is the breakdown of communication. When employees are expending energy to reactively address these conflicts, time and resources are taken away from the core mission of serving survivors. To support the Program Council agencies of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV), Emily Hinrichsen, Director of Training, created a training on ethical communication. An outline of the training and learning objectives is included in this resource. If a Program Council agency is interested in hosting this training for its staff, please contact Emily at [email protected] to schedule an in-person or virtual training.

The Illinois General Assembly approved an increase of $50 million in the general revenue allocation for domestic violence services in Illinois for SFY2023. ICADV developed an advocacy strategy which made this increase come to fruition and the plan presented to the General Assembly was based on a necessary investment in five core needs which would best meet the needs of all survivors in Illinois:
- Stabilize the current workforce
- Provide thriving wages for staff, and retain trained employees
- Expand existing services
- Increase community outreach and education Increase safe housing
- Increase prevention
To help inform the Illinois Department of Human Services decision making around this increase, in May 2022 ICADV released a needs assessment survey of domestic violence service providers - those currently funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), those that are members of ICADV, and/or any others that serve survivors of domestic violence and their children as a part of their primary mission. The purpose of this survey was to gather more specific information about the current needs of providers which will help them better meet the needs of all survivors, with special consideration given to underserved populations.
This information was compiled and shared with the IDHS. Here is a summary of the assessment responses.

Want to play a centralized role in the development of a new project in Illinois that will identify barriers to safety and justice for survivors of domestic violence; identify how institutional incentives discourage or encourage excellent responses to domestic violence; identify gaps in training, policy, practice, resources, communication, and collaboration; and help communities think creatively about how to work differently to better support survivors? One of these positions may be perfect for you. Illinois recently enacted a statewide Fatality Review initiative to do those things.
ICADV is seeking two qualified candidates to fill the positions created to implement this project:
A Director of Fatality Review to work collaboratively with the Statewide Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee to develop the foundational policies and procedures by which the statewide committee will implement the project and report on the reviews.
A Fatality Review Coordinator to work with local communities to develop review teams, and subsequently help them conduct and report on their reviews. ICADV is the statewide advocacy coalition composed of over 50 member organizations throughout Illinois who serve over 50,000 survivors of domestic violence and their children each year.
Through training and technical assistance ICADV provides support to those agencies to provide the best service to families. Our advocacy, lobbying and public education help inform policy development that builds the best safety nets possible for survivors and their children while holding perpetrators accountable.

By the Child Welfare Information Gateway and Children's Bureau, An Office of the Administration on Children and Families
The August/September 2020 special issue of Children's Bureau Express draws attention to the need for an antiracist child welfare system that dedicates resources for enabling children and families
of all races and ethnicities, and particularly those from marginalized communities, to achieve their
full potential. The issue features guest articles from a range of leaders in the child welfare field,
including voices from the public, private, philanthropic, and faith-based sectors. This bulletin was
designed, in part, to present strategies that can be used in agency practice to directly answer the
issue's call to action.

Each year too many domestic violence relationships end in death – death of the primary victim, death of the children in family, death of bystanders like family, friends, and neighbors, and ultimately, sometimes the person causing the harm. ICADV releases an Annual Domestic Violence Homicide report to summarize the circumstances involved in those domestic violence incidents which end in death(s). This report for is for the Fiscal Year 2021. ICADV’s fiscal years run from July – June. ICADV typically publishes this report in late September or early October.

This report for is for the Fiscal Year 2020. ICADV’s fiscal years run from July – June. ICADV typically publishes this report in late September or early October.
