Orders of Protection in Illinois Civil or Criminal Court - General Information
The Illinois Domestic Violence Act recognizes Domestic Violence
as a serious crime. It is against the laws of Illinois for a
household or family member to beat, harass, or intimidate you.
No one has the right to threaten or assault you. You have the
right to be protected.
The Illinois Domestic Violence Act creates legal remedies for
victims through an Order of Protection. An Order of Protection
can be an important legal tool to help provide safety for you and
your children, regardless of whether you want to remain in the
relationship. It also requires that law enforcement officers
provide specific types of help to victims.
An Order of Protection can be issued in either Civil or Criminal
Court.
